MANILA, Philippines — Cloudy weather and scattered rain showers are expected to persist over many parts of Luzon on Monday, Dec. 9, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In a weathercast, Pagasa specialist Rhea Torres said three weather systems are still influencing the country’s atmospheric conditions: the shear line, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), and the northeast monsoon, locally termed “amihan.”
Article continues after this advertisementAccording to Torres, the shear line is anticipated to cause overcast skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in the Bicol Region, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Quezon, and Aurora.

(In parts of Quezon, as well as some areas in the Bicol Region and nearby provinces such as Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, Marinduque, Romblon, and Oriental Mindoro, cloudy weather is expected today. Scattered rain showers, thunderstorms, and lightning may also occur due to the effects of the shear line.)

(We are also observing thick cloud formations that may bring rainy weather to a big part of Visayas and Mindanao, as well as Palawan. This is due to the intertropical convergence zone or ITCZ.)

“Itong northeast monsoon o hanging amihan, nakakaapekto po sa may bahagi ng hilagang Luzon or northern Luzon area. Magdudulot po ito ng maulap na kalangitan na may kasamang mga pag-ulan sa may bahagi po ng Cagayan Valley, pati na rin sa may Cordillera Administrative Region,” she said.
(The northeast monsoon or hanging amihan is currently affecting the northern Luzon area. This will bring cloudy skies with rain to parts of the Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region.)

Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon would see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains also due to the northeast monsoon, Torres noted.
As for Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, the Pagasa weather specialist said partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms will prevail.
“Dito po sa Metro Manila, sa may Cavite, as well as sa may Occidental Mindoro, although magiging bahagyang maulap hanggang sa maulap po ang papawirin, mataas po ‘yung tsansa na mga biglaan o mga panandaliang buhos ng ulan dulot po ng mga isolated thunderstorms, especially po pagdating sa hapon o sa gabi,” Torres noted.
(In Metro Manila, Cavite, and Occidental Mindoro, skies will be partly cloudy to cloudy, and there is a high chance of sudden or brief heavy rains due to isolated thunderstorms, especially by afternoon or evening.)
Torres advised the public to bring an umbrella or pack rain gear if heading out on Monday, and to tune-in on Pagasa’s bulletins to stay updated about the weather.
Meanwhile, the western seaboard of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon were forecast to have waves as high as five meters on Monday due to strong to gale-force winds, according to Pagasa.

The state weather agency raised a gale alert over these seaboardsmega swerte, warning that it would be dangerous for small vessels to travel through water.
