Doordarshansolare, on Tuesday, announced that it will have a special screening of the 4K restored version of Shyam Benegal’s 1946 classic Manthan to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker. Benegal passed away on December 23 due to kidney-related issues.. He was 90.
Manthan, restored by the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) for its premiere at the Cannes Classic section last year, will air on Doordarshan today, January 1, 2025, at 8 pm.
FHF shared the news on its official X page, acknowledging that it received support from the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (Amul) for the film's restoration.

Manthan also starred Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Amrish Puri and Anant Nag in key roles.
The film won two National Film Awards in 1977- best feature film in Hindi and for best screenplay.

Shyam Benegal, the pioneer of Indian parallel cinema, was laid to rest on December 24, at Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium, Mumbai, with full state honours. Later, a memorial service was held in Mumbai to celebrate the life of the film auteur. It was attended by Naseeruddin Shah, Javed Akhtar, and Shabana Azmi, among others.
Benegal is known for his films like Ankur, Bhumika, Nishant, Mandi, Junoon, Kalyug and Zubeidaa among others.
Over his career of five decades, Benegal received several accolades, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
He bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times and was also honoured with the V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.solare
